Crisis Support

Lifeline has a 24/7 confidential crisis support service. Trained volunteers are available to listen and provide support and referrals. There is also an online support chat from 7pm to 12am, 7 days a week. Please note that the online chat should not be used in a crisis situation, please call the telephone helpline instead.

The Suicide Callback Service provides free phone, video and online counselling (all 24/7) for anyone affected by suicide. Staffed by professional counsellors with specialist skills in working with suicide-related issues, the service can provide ongoing counselling or referrals to other services. Please note that the video and online counselling should not be used in a crisis situation, please call the telephone helpline.

General Mental Health

The Beyondblue Support Service offers confidential online (3pm-12am/7 days) and telephone (24hr/7days) counselling, support and referrals from trained professionals.

The Butterfly National Helpline is a confidential service that offers information, counselling and treatment referrals from experienced and professionally trained counsellors by telephone or online chat (both 8am-12am/7days).

MensLine Australia offers a confidential telephone (24hrs/7day) and online (4pm-10pm/7days) support, information and referral service for men with family and relationship concerns. The service is staffed by qualified professionals experienced in men’s issues.

NSW Mental Health Line – 1800 011 511

The NSW Mental Health Line is a 24/7 telephone assessment and referral service, staffed by mental health clinicians. This service can provide advice about clinical symptoms, the urgency of the need for care and information about local service providers.

The SANE Helpline telephone and online chat service (both 10am-10pm/Mon-Fri) is where you can talk to a mental health professional for information, guidance and referrals.

Carers

The Carer Line (9am-5pm/Mon-Fri) is staffed by experienced carer support officers who offer emotional support, referrals and information to carers and community members.

Carer Gateway has a phone (8am-6pm/Mon-Fri) service that provides practical information and resources to support carers.

Defence

Defence Family Helpline – 1800 624 608

The Defence Family Helpline provides support and information for Australian Defence Force members and their families. The telephone helpline is available 24hrs/7days and is staffed by qualified human services professionals including social workers and psychologists. You can also contact the helpline while living overseas.

Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Service – www.vvcs.gov.au 1800 011 046

Veterans and Veterans Families Counselling Services provides confidential telephone (24hrs/7days) counselling, support and referral for war and service-related mental health conditions as well as relationship and family matters. It is available to current and former ADF members, ADF Reservists who have served in domestic or international relief operations, DVA Health Card (white or gold) holders and their family members.

Drugs, Alcohol and Gambling

Alcohol and Other Drugs Information Service (ADIS) – 1800 250 015

ADIS is a NSW state-wide, 24/7, confidential telephone service providing information, support, referral and counselling on topics such as illegal and legal drugs, parent advice and detoxification.

Counselling Online – www.counsellingonline.org.au

Counselling Online provides free, 24/7, web chat and email services that allow you to correspond with a professional counsellor about an alcohol or drug related concern. The website also provides an online tool for self-assessment, peer support forums, self-help tools and SMS support.

Gambling Help provides information and a telephone and online (both 24hrs/7days) support service for people affected by problem gambling. This free and confidential service is staffed by both problem gambling counsellors and financial counsellors.

Grief and Loss

Greif Line is a confidential telephone counselling service (12pm-3am/7 days) for anyone who is experiencing grief and loss. There is also a 24/7 online email service.

NALAG Centre for Loss and Grief – www.nalag.org.au 02 6882 9222

NALAG provides free loss and grief support to the community. This service can be provided to individuals face to face (not in all areas of NSW) or over the phone. You will need to register to access these services and recieve regular appointments with a trained grief support volunteer. Call the number above during business hours to register. 

LGBTIQ+

ACON – www.acon.org.au 

ACON offers programs and services to people in regional NSW such as counselling and care coordination. See their website for more information on services in your local area.

QLife – www.qlife.org.au 1800 184 527

QLife is a telephone and online (both 3pm to 12am/7 days) counselling and referral service for people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, and/or intersex. Also offers help, information and advice for someone who may be worried about a friend or family member.

Parenting

PANDA National Helpline – www.panda.org.au 1300 726 306

Perinatal Anxiety and Depression Australia supports women, men and families affected by anxiety or depression during pregnancy and early childhood. PANDA National Helpline (9am-7.30pm/Mon-Fri) offers a confidential telephone service providing listening, support, strategies and referrals by trained counsellors.

ParentLine NSW – 1300 13 00 52

Parent Line NSW is a confidential telephone counselling, information and referral service for parents and carers of children aged 0 to 18 in NSW. Trained professional counsellors are available from 9am to 9pm weekdays and from 4pm to 9pm weekends.

Telehealth Services

Black Dog Institute Rural and Regional Telepsychiatry Clinic – www.blackdoginstitute.org.au 02 9382 2991

The Black Dog Institute offers telehealth consultations to rural and regional areas in Australia for adults, adolescents and children over 8 years. The telehealth appointment takes place via Skype (or similar software) in the presence of your health professional. You will require a GP referral for this service and the cost will be bulked billed.  

GP2U – www.gp2u.com.au 

GP2U is a virtual practice that allows you to access a doctor from anywhere in Australia. To make an appointment either book online or on the app, however Medicare does not currently provide rebates for these services so it will cost you between $70 and $90 for an appointment. You can pick up any prescriptions from your chosen pharmacy and you also ask for the results to be sent to your regular doctor. 

PSYCH2U – www.psych2u.com.au  

PSYCH2U is a virtual practice that allows you to access a psychologist or psychiatrist from anywhere in Australia. Those in rural locations will be bulk billed, however there are some criteria depending on your location. For psychologists you are only eligible to be bulk billed if you are in a remote area but for psychiatrists you are eligible to be bulked billed in all rural and remote areas. To make an appointment, you will need a GP referral.  

Call to Mind – www.calltomind.com.au

Call to Mind is a virtual practice that allows you to access a psychiatrist from anywhere in Australia. The team comprises many different psychiatrists, including an Aboriginal man, and is suitable for those from a culturally and linguistically diverse background. Those in rural and remote areas will be bulk billed. To make an appointment, you will need a referral from a GP.

The Blue Knot Helpline is a telephone (9am-5pm/7days) services that provides information, support and referral to adult survivors of childhood trauma and abuse and their families and friends by a trained and experienced counsellor.

1800 RESPECT offers a confidential telephone and online chat (both 24hrs/7days) service for information on sexual assault, family and domestic violence as well as referral and counselling by qualified and experienced counsellors.

Youth

eHeadspace offers free and confidential online and telephone (both 9am-1am/7 days) services to provide advice to young people or parents/carers of young people by qualified and experienced youth mental health professionals.

Kids Helpline – www.kidshelpline.com.au 1800 55 1800

Kids Helpline is a free, 24/7, confidential support and counselling telephone service that kids can use for a wide range of issues such as family, friends, school, abuse, mental illness, drug and alcohol use, homelessness and suicide. Counselling can also be provided online (8am-12am/7day).
